The metaverse is a three-dimensional virtual world that integrates aspects of online gaming, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR) to create a space where users can interact virtually. The metaverse uses educational resources to encourage students to learn, as educators can use the metaverse for virtual field trips, lessons, and physical education. In addition, the metaverse allows educators to create an immersive learning environment as the platform gives students and their avatars access to the entire world. Knowing this, we analysed how educators use the metaverse in K-12 schools.

Safeguarding Students Learning

Metaverse learning environments promote safety in a way that real-world teaching can’t. In the metaverse, educators will have complete control over student interactions and can limit bullying or separate children for disciplinary purposes by changing some permissions in the virtual space. This way, children can focus on learning instead of worrying about bullies or other distractions. For every school, the metaverse will look different. For example, the Dallas Hybrid Prep metaverse platform STEMuli is a learning management system that allows students to work in their own time within an enhanced virtual learning environment. Students can join their teachers while learning from home to collaborate and complete gaming-style assignments, using avatars and earning online currency for completing the assigned tasks.

VR Headsets

The metaverse presents an innovative way of virtually interacting with others worldwide, as students can put on a virtual reality headset to log in to a virtual space and communicate with their peers. Virtual reality headsets and controllers are designed to feel natural and can replicate hands and fingers while the student is wearing the gear. For universities, the metaverse can facilitate an immersive campus life, where learners wearing VR headsets can enter the virtual campus to learn, explore, and socialize. For example, learners can visit virtual libraries and attend online society fairs to meet other students and lecturers in this digital space. These digital experiences can truly democratize K-12 education by bringing people from different parts of the world and varied economic backgrounds together to learn.

Virtual 3D Classrooms

With the emergence of online schools, students are beginning to experience a gap between physical classrooms and virtual ones. The metaverse can bridge this gap by creating 3D virtual classrooms where students can virtually meet and interact with their classmates, and teachers can share their discoveries. Students can explore as they wish, asking questions that support their learning. In addition, teachers can design virtual landscapes based on their lesson plans, creating an engaging environment for the students. The metaverse in K-12 education allows teachers to play a more active role in collecting data and analysing lessons to track progress, identify gaps, and continuously improve the students’ learning experience.
